Set against the backdrop of the Caucasus Mountains, Queen Tamar Mestia Airport serves as a key gateway to one of Georgia’s most scenic and remote regions. To accommodate the area’s growing number of visitors, the airport is undergoing major modernization led by LSG Solutions, whose Georgian design team, headed by Nino Grigolashvili and Teona Gogoladze, won a national competition among 18 contenders.
The new 21,500-square-foot, single-story terminal will feature an open-plan layout that merges the departure and arrival areas, skylights with heated glass, and a timber structure that fills the space with natural light. Inspired by the royal garments of Queen Tamar, the design pays tribute to Georgia’s most iconic female ruler and her enduring legacy.
Located in the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region, just 1.6 miles from Mestia, the airport connects travelers to nearby ski resorts, hiking trails, and cultural landmarks. Domestic flights from Kutaisi and Natakhtari airports offer a faster and more scenic alternative to the nine-hour drive from Tbilisi.
According to LSG Solutions, the new terminal represents more than just functionality—it is a modern interpretation of Georgia’s heritage, blending tradition and innovation to welcome travelers into the story of the country’s Golden Age.
