Tbilisi’s multidisciplinary design and project management firm LSG Solutions has unveiled its winning design for the new Mestia Airport terminal in Georgia’s Svaneti region — a project inspired by the legacy of Queen Tamar, who reigned during Georgia’s Golden Age.
Led by an all-Georgian team of architects, engineers, and consultants, the 2,000 m² single-story terminal combines historical motifs and contemporary design, serving as a cultural landmark rather than merely a transport hub.
“The new Mestia Airport terminal transcends utility,” said LSG Solutions. “It embodies a dialogue between heritage and innovation — a contemporary retelling of Georgia’s identity.”
Design lead Nino Grigolashvili noted the symbolism of “a woman architect designing an airport named after a woman monarch,” with the building’s form drawing directly from Queen Tamar’s royal garments.
Constructed primarily from locally sourced timber, the design features a gridded roof with skylights, floor-to-ceiling windows, and stone-clad walls that fill the interior with natural light and warmth.
Selected through a national competition organized by the United Airports of Georgia, the project was praised for its spatial clarity, cultural sensitivity, and innovative engineering. Construction is expected to begin this year.
